We are now accepting applications for the 2019 Underground Trojans Scholarship essay contest! Winner will be announced in June 2019.

Deadline: April 15, 2019

How Can I Apply?

Applicants are asked to prepare a 500 - 1000 word essay using the following writing prompt:

Activist work focusing on incarceration has followed two distinct, yet sometimes overlapping, philosophies: prison abolition and prison reform. Many people will argue that these philosophies overlap, but others will see them as opposed. For example: "A cage is a cage is a cage. We want strategies that let people out of cages, not ones that are for building nicer or better cages.."

Reflect on the approaches of prison abolition and prison reform--where might they overlap? What do you think we, as a society, should do with the 'cage,' and is building 'better cages' antithetical to letting people out of cages, or can these goals coexist?
