About the event
VIRTUES AND VICES: Compassion
What is the nature of compassion? Do feelings of sympathy and altruism play a meaningful role in how we define ethical action? Can feelings be virtuous, as suggested by the language of compassion, or is some element of reason or deliberate action required? That said, can one ever really identify with the suffering of others or understand their experiences? What do we speak
of when we are speaking of sympathizing with the experiences of others? Please join us for an informal discussion the nature of compassion and its continued relevance in contemporary ethical debate. The event forms part of a series of reflections on contemporary questions in ethics to be followed by similar discussion of the nature of friendship and moral freedom.
